Privacy policy

The short version: no accounts and no names. Votes are anonymous, the only email we ever ask for is an optional waitlist signup, and kids pages never get personalized ads.

Who we are

RatherQuestions (ratherquestions.com) is run by JE Design Studio Inc.. Questions about this policy go to [email protected].

What we collect

Votes. When you pick an answer, we store which option you picked and when. We don't ask for your name, email or any other personal details, and there are no accounts.

An anonymous voting cookie. The first time you vote, we set a cookie (rq_vid) holding a random ID, so each person gets one vote per question and we can show you your own answer. We only store a scrambled (hashed) version of that ID next to your votes, so it can't be turned back into the cookie or linked to you. The cookie is never set if you only browse, and it lasts a year.

Waitlist signups. If you join the waitlist for our Slack and Teams app (on the daily question and work pages), we store your email address, plus your team's chat app and size if you choose them, and which page you signed up on. We use it only to email you about that app, never share or sell it, and delete it if you ask. The form never appears on our kids or seasonal pages.

Server logs. Like almost every website, our server briefly logs technical details of each request (such as IP address and browser type) to keep the site secure and working.

Cookies

You can change your choices anytime with the link in the footer.

  • Necessary: the voting cookie above, and cc_cookie, which remembers your cookie choices. Site staff also get a sign-in cookie on the admin pages. These are always on because the site needs them.
  • Analytics (Google Analytics): tells us which questions and pages people use, in aggregate. In the EU, EEA, UK, Switzerland, Brazil and Canada it stays off unless you turn it on. Everywhere else it's on unless you turn it off. It's always off on our kids and seasonal pages.
  • Marketing: personalized advertising. Off unless you turn it on, everywhere, and never used on our kids and seasonal pages.

Analytics and advertising

We use Google Tag Manager and Google Analytics, which respect your cookie choices through Google Consent Mode. Analytics only loads once you interact with a page, so we aren't counting automated visitors.

We may show ads from Google. Unless you've accepted marketing cookies, ads aren't personalized. You can learn how Google uses data at policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.

Children's privacy

Some of our pages are made for kids and classrooms: the kids and middle school pages, the seasonal pages (Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, winter) and their questions. On those pages:

  • We don't ask for or collect any personal information from children.
  • No analytics or advertising cookies are set, even if you accepted them on another page. We only see anonymous page counts, with no identifier attached.
  • Ads, if shown, are never personalized, and advertising tags are kept off.
  • The voting cookie is used only to count one vote per question, which is part of how the game works, not to track or profile anyone.

If you're a parent or teacher and think a child has shared personal information with us, email [email protected] and we'll delete it.

How long we keep things

Votes are kept as anonymous totals for as long as the question is on the site. Server logs are deleted on a rolling basis. Analytics data is kept according to our Google Analytics retention settings.

Your rights

Depending on where you live (for example in the EU, UK or California), you may have the right to ask what we hold about you, have it deleted, or object to how it's used. Unless you've joined the waitlist, we don't hold your name or contact details, so there's usually nothing that identifies you. If you'd like to ask anyway, email [email protected]. You can also clear our cookies in your browser at any time.
